Homonyms Within the Nomenclator Zoologicus schema is a boolean attribute "homonymFlag". This flag is set to true if the record is a member of a "homonym group." Homonym groups were calculated using the following protocol:
A record with a homonymFlag value of true (1) is not necessarily a true nomenclatural homonym. Homonyms are identical names that refer to different taxa. Identifying homonyms within the NZ was confounded by the occurrence of duplicate records within the text. Our procedure for setting the homonymflag was to examine potential homonym groups. If the sole members of the group were determined to be identical the flag was set to zero. If at least two members of a group were determined to be different the flag was set to 1. This determination was made through examining the name and author combinations. Members of these groups may still contain some duplicates which we retain in order to preserve the fidelity of the original. There are cases where a misspelled form of a name coincides with a correctly spelled name, forming an ad-hoc homonym. There are even cases where two different genera are misspelled the same way to form a different sort of ad-hoc homonym (See Cythna, Cyclus). There are many records within the body of the document (i.e., those records not contained within the Addenda and Corrigenda sections) that nonetheless represent either duplicate records or Corrigenda items. See Centor - in come cases there is a record within the body of the Nomenclator that appears to be a Corrigenda item denoting a correction. There may be an additional and duplicate records within the Corrigenda sections. See also Acanthodotheca, Hormantris, Ceriella, Hyppobosca, Lampristis, Moralesia, Nodita, Pachybolus, Paramadiza, Trichobrachirus, Tropidomyia, Xenopepla, Zaphymatocera, Egginoneura, Eremoplia, Eremotrogus, Hysterophora, and others.
